Hydrolic Fracking Research Paper - 1784 Words
Hydraulic fracturing is a process used in nine out of 10 natural gas wells in the United States, where millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals are pumped underground to break apart the rock and release the gas. Scientists are worried that the chemicals used in fracturing may pose a threat either underground or when waste fluids are handled and sometimes spilled on the surface. The natural gas industry defends hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking, as safe and efficient. Thomas J. Pyle, president of the Institute for Energy Research, a pro-industry non-profit organization, claims fracking has been ââ¬Å"a widely deployed as safe extraction technique,â⬠dating back to 1949. What he doesnââ¬â¢t say is that until recently energyâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In its citation to Carizzo Oil and Gas, the DEP strongly recommended that the company cease drilling at all 67 wells ââ¬Å"until the cause of this problem and a solution are identified.â⬠In December 2011, the federal Environmental Protection Agency concluded that fracking operations could be responsible for groundwater pollution.ââ¬Å"Todayââ¬â¢s methods make gas drilling a filthy business. You know itââ¬â¢s bad when nearby residents can light the water coming out of their tap on fire,â⬠says Larry Schweiger, president of the National Wildlife Federation. Whatââ¬â¢s causing the fire is the methane from the drilling operations. A ProPublica investigation in 2009 revealed methane contamination was widespread in drinking water in areas around fracking operations in Colorado, Texas, Wyoming, and Pennsylvania. The presence of methane in drinking water in Dimock, Pa., had become the focal point for Josh Foxââ¬â¢s investigative documentary, Gasland, which received an Academy Award nomination in 2011 for Outstanding Documentary; Fox also received an Emmy for non-fiction directing. Foxââ¬â¢s interest in fracking intensified when a natural gas company offe red $100,000 for mineral rights on property his family owned in Milanville, in the extreme northeast part of Pennsylvania, about 60 miles east of Dimock. Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin Essay Example For Students
Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin Essay A Comparison between the First Chapters of Oliver Twist and Therese Raquinà Oliver Twist and Therese Raquin are written by Charles Dickens and Emile Zola respectively. Oliver Twist is a critism towards the Victorian Times where classification among the high, middle and low classes was very strict. In the novel, the orphan, Oliver uses humour to get back on the society. Therese Raquin is set in Paris in the 1800s. The plot revolves around Therese Raquin who has a loveless marriage with a sickly weak man, Camille. She falls for his friend Laurent and they plot to kill Camille, resulting in a nightmare. Oliver Twist and Camille Raquin are both the main male characters experiencing low standards of living. Their sufferings bring about the miserable lives of other characters, this sense of depression in the novel is introduced in the openings.à In Oliver Twist the first sentence directly hints the consequences that is about to come, into this world of sorrow and troubleit remained a matter of considerable doubt whether the child would survive to bear any name at all. Already the opening suggests an issue. The difficulty of the babies birth mentioned emphasizes the sorrow and trouble mentioned earlier in the line. By describing this situation, it also hints to the reader that more issues relating to this new born child will come. In contrast to Oliver Twist the sense of trouble in Therese Raquin is not introduced by a situation but a description of the environment. Zola uses pathetic fallacy for the majority of the first chapter, On fine days in the summer, when the streets are burning with heavy sun, whitish light falls from the dirty glazing overhead to drag miserably through the arcade. This second paragraph illustrates the association between positivity and negativity. The whitish light from summer gives a positive feeling while the misery gives a negative feeling. Even though it is a fine day, the whitish light falls will always carry misery with it. It is hinting that the joy of removing a trouble may be followed or drag more troubles along with it. For example, later in the novel Laurent and Therese gets rid of Camille but in return it haunts their relationship. This association is also made in Oliver Twist, however in a different way. The positive feeling is not emphasized by imageries but the sense of life in characters. Dickens has done this by giving details to characters using speeches, for example, the joy of the surgeon is expressed by, Its all over, Mrs. Thingummy! This technique makes the reader feel as if they are experiencing the situation first handed. Compared to Therese Raquin the characters feelings are not expressed but described only, this makes the reader feel as if they are experiencing the situation second handed. Zola uses descriptions of larger locations, slowly narrowing down to a smaller place. The passage to the Arcade of Pont Neuf is followed by the shops interior descriptions to introduce the characters. In comparison to Oliver Twist, the baby is introduced before the workhouse location and the characters there during his birth.

Jazz Essays (654 words) - African-American Music, Blues, Jazz
Jazz As the United States entered the 1920s it was not as unified as one might think. Not one, but two societies existed. The Black society, whose ancestors had been oppressed throughout the ages, and the White society, the oppressors of these men and women. After emancipation the Whites no longer needed the Blacks, but were forced to live with them. The Blacks despised the Whites, but even so they became more like them in every way. Even though these two races had grown so similar over the past century and a half, they were still greatly diversified. One aspect of this great diversity was the difference in music trends. The White society was still in love with the European classical music. The Blacks on the other hand had created something all their own. Jazz, Blues, and Ragtime originated in New Orleans in the 19th century, but by the 1920s it had become famous throughout America. The Whites tried to suppress the Blacks with new laws, but the power of this strengthened race was too grea t. The Negro music of the 20th century had a huge affect on Black and White relations, and helped to bring the two societies together. When the slaves first came to the colonies they brought nothing with them, that is, except their music. They sang their songs while at work in the fields. This original music is called the old blues. The blues became the symbol of the new American race, and the home of this music was New Orleans. New Orleans had been a melting pot of culture ever since emancipation had freed the slaves, but more was being mixed than just culture. Music from the Blacks was blending with the Whites music, and creating an entirely different form of music, which had never been seen before. This early form of Jazz began to be heard in the North and was developed further with the help of technical devices. Blues music had become more than just a symbol of the slaves, now it was becoming a symbol of America. The reason for this was because jazz and blues could be played by anyone from the whitest white to the blackest black. By this time White Americans could be heard playing the true jazz and blues. The tr ue jazz was music played by the black man, because it was his music. Even white jazz players were beginning to be famous. Artists such as Paul White man and O.D.J.B. were whites who began to play jazz. Music played by these people was really the first jazz that northerners were exposed to, and because of this black northerners began to think of jazz as a white dilution of blues. Jazz music used the same instruments as ragtime did except for the piano. The piano was not brought into the picture until later. In 1921 the first Black jazz band broke onto the national scene. This band contained many of the greats such as Joe Oliver and Louis Armstrong. They offered a smoother type of jazz compared to the sloppy jazz of the early White groups. Chaucer s Women essays
Chaucer' s Women essays Chaucers masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales, reflects a very opinionated view of manners and the behaviors of medieval women. Chaucer portrays two extremes of female conduct during this period through the characters of the Prioress and the Wife of Bath. Through the images and descriptions in the poem, the Wife of Bath is representative of a female liberal extremist. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Prioress, who is a better example of womanhood in the medieval ages. With the use of these contradictory characters, Chaucer shows his viewpoint on how women in society should act, both the right and the wrong ways. To look more closely at the differences we must not go to far, let us look at the General Prologue. Chaucer portrays The Wife of Baths physical attributes, saying: Gat-toothed was she smoothly for to saye (line ). Her gap symbolizes her sexual accomplishments and her vast beauty. To farther our vivid image of such a woman we should look to the third stanza of the general prologue, Hir coverchiefs ful fine were ground- I dorste swere they weyeden ten pounds- That on a Sonday weren upon hir heed. Ful straite yted , and shoes ful moiste and newe. Bold was her face and fair and reed of hewe. (lines ) This woman is afraid of neither moral questioning nor mockery that goes on before her eyes. IN her attire on Sunday, she wears an enormous hat and hose of scarlet red to call attention to herself on the day of Sabbath. Chaucer describes her as an unattractive woman with her distinguished red face. The Wife of Bath is a radical feminist of her time. Unlike most woman of her era, she was able to make her own decisions, especially when it came to sexuality. Chaucer shows us this through her ongoing conversations with the other travelers, Housbonds at church dore she have five (line ). She is not pure by any means: thou hast five housbondes&apo...
